About Hulin Chapter #93
It took a few sisters with a vision, and a brother with a heart to give his love and support to give birth to Hulin Chapter #93 Order of the Eastern Star. Named to honor the memory of the mother of Odell Young, our first Worthy Matron, the Hulin Chapter #93 of the Order of the Eastern Star had it's inception on October 14, 1978. Hulin Chapter #93 Order of the Eastern Star is housed in the Northeast Georgia 13th District. Our chapter is an auxiliary to Smooth Ashlar Grand Lodge Free & Accepted Ancient York-rite Masons, Prince Hall Origin (National Compact), Jurisdiction of Georgia. During it's inaugural year, our chapter assisted the Northeast Georgia's 13th District in hosting the Annual Grand Communication for the Most Worshipful Smooth Ashlar Grand Lodge, here in our very city of Athens, GA.
Our mission, as quoted by Past Grand Master Campfield, is to be
"an institution dedicated to charity and the well being of men and women. We foster goodwill and helping hands. In order for this to prevail, there must be a base, for us it's cemented by ethical behavior. We are a people of Good Sound Moral Judgment. We are a people of Honor and Truth." We are not only members of a fraternal organization with a rich and extensive history, we are also part of a family, world-wide, of strong Christian women & men, fairest among thousands, altogether lovely.
Hulin Chapter #93 is comprised of many outstanding women and men in our community. Sister Madelyn Moore-Jones, Hulin's Secretary, received the honor of "Star of the Year 2007-2008"; Sister Tammy Luke, Hulin's Associate Conductress, served as OES Queen 2008-2009; and Sister Brenda Brown, our Worthy Matron, received the top honor of Worthy Matron of the Year, 2009-2010! Although many of our sisters and brothers have yet to be recognized for their contributions, they, much like many of our sisters and brothers in the Order world-wide, are all altruistic leaders. Recognition is not necessary as charity originates in the warmth of our hearts, and we are truly dedicated to charity, truth, and loving kindness.
Charity
The Hulin Chapter #93 continues to make a positive impact on the community through various charitable events. Members take the time to visit those who are ill and extend a helping hand to assist those in need in any way possible. Chapter members attend state-wide OES workshops and continue to assist with workshops held in the 13th District. In recent years, our Chapter has participated in an Annual Christmas Empty Stocking Drive, during which we collect toys, food, and clothing for children in need. Sisters of the Hulin Chapter #93 also assist our Brother Masons of Advance Lodge #31 with their Annual Bike-a-Thon: an event during which Brother Masons collect old discarded bikes and restore them to like new conditions. The newly restored bikes are then to be distributed to families who might not otherwise be able to afford bikes for their children.
We are also committed to giving out meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas to members of the community. We do these things not only during the holiday season, but when the need arises or a particular need is expressed. We participate in bingo games at Grandview Nursing Home, which we have adopted as our nursing home, and we help provide gifts for the residents, on occasion, when we are unable to directly participate in the games.
Each year, Hulin Chapter #93 participates in the Annual Loretta Cleveland Fall Festival in Athens, GA: the biggest fall
festival in the Athens African American community. Not only are we blessed to have the opportunity to participate in the annual parade in honor of the late Ms. Cleveland, we later assist our Brother Masons with their food service booth and met in fellowship with members of our community. Members of Hulin Chapter #93 were interviewed live on the radio during the 2008 festival!! For more about the Loretta Cleveland Fall Festival, along with photos, visit our Shutterfly Picture Gallery.

History of OES
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. It was established in 1850 by Rob Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, Massachusetts who had been an official with the Freemasons. It is based on teachings from the Bible, but is open to people of all monotheistic faiths. It has approximately 10,000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately one million members under its General Grand Chapter. Members of the Order are aged 18 and older; men must be Master Masons and women must have specific relationships with Masons. Originally, a woman would have to be the daughter, widow, wife, sister, or mother of a master Mason, but the Order now allows other relatives as well as allowing Rainbow Girls and Job's Daughters to become members when they become of age.
Eastern Star is a social Order comprised of persons with deep religious convictions and spiritual values, but is not a religion. Its appeal rests in the true beauty of the refreshing and character building lessons that are so sincerely portrayed in its ritualistic work. A deep fraternal bond exists between is members. It is the wholesome relationship of brotherly and sisterly love brought about through high principles exemplified in our daily lives which makes us near and dear to each other.
